Liang’s homepage

Tuesday, November 16th, 2004 -- By ET

My friend Zhang Liang has his first homepage posted.
http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/lz33/index.htm

He wants it to be funnier than the current form, what’s impressive is his number of papers written in the last 6 years, no wonder he gets 2 phd’s from Cornell and U Arizona respectively.

Fun with prime numbers

Wednesday, November 10th, 2004 -- By ET

I don’t usually have time or have the mood to indulge myself writing multiple blogs per day.

But this one is good!

prime number algorithms

It explores several algorithms to calculate prime numbers. It uses straightforward C as the language, and walks through all sorts of potential ways to knock the best out of a commodity machine. In my case, the program is improved from 5 minutes( 300 seconds) to a matter of 20 seconds. (pentium III 800 machine with 128M mem).

It runs significantly faster on a better machine. The speed improves from 1 m 15 s to 1.8 seconds. (dual Xeon 2.8G CPU, 1.5G mem).

Fortune Cookie

fortunecookie Fortune cookies can sometimes inspire a person. I sometimes read things like “You will live a happy and peaceful life”. The way they are written makes them almost always suitable for you if you try to find the connections.

There is one I remember as very inspiring:”Your path is arduous but will be amply rewarding.”

I’d like to share this one with all the people who have to work long hours.

Apache friends

Monday, November 8th, 2004 -- By ET

apachefriends Just installed a new server DO.MIT.EDU where DO means “Digital Organization”. I don’t want to mess applications with the OS, so installed a very clean Redhat Enterprise Version 3. I also need to install Apache, Perl, MySQL, PHP, among others.
interface
A casual search returned this website called Apache Friends, it looks amazing.

The download is 33MB, much smaller than the individual components combined.

I would rate it as extremely easy to install and get things up and running. I have not got a chance to port my stuff to it, but so far it looks not a hard job.

Have I noticed beauty in my life today?

Friday, November 5th, 2004 -- By ET

Just came across this banner in Athena clusters. The answer is yes. :-)
The leaves are falling, the grass is green, continuous colors on a homogeneous green. That’s what I see as beautiful.
