war on spam

Thursday, December 30th, 2004 -- By ET

I’ve started a war with comment spam. I will take any measures to keep them away from me. Here is a link
to all the available resources.

Here is AuthImage plugin to deter spam.

First, I changed the name of wp-comments-post.php to another name and made the corresponding adjustment in wp-comments.php.
Second, I installed the plugin of authimage
I think these 2 measures can effectively deter comment spams.

Science Commons

Thursday, December 30th, 2004 -- By ET

A new project aimed at improving the dissemination of scientific publications and data has been announced by people from Creative Commons. The National Institutes of Health is already proposing mandated Open Access to all NIH-funded research, and many scientists welcome the free redistribution of their papers, they just don’t know the legal details of how to do it. The Science Commons project will take on the copyright problems unique to scientists (things like pre and post prints, and electronic vs. paper journal distribution).

The mission of Science Commons is to encourage scientific innovation by making it easier for scientists, universities, and industries to use literature, data, and other scientific intellectual property and to share their knowledge with others. Science Commons works within current copyright and patent law to promote legal and technical mechanisms that remove barriers to sharing.

Crop Circles

Thursday, December 30th, 2004 -- By ET

I’ve always wanted to write something about crop circles. I first read about them when I was in elementary school, and it seems that there are more and more evidences through the years.

In many cases, the crop circles are very well designed. In a few instances, the crop circles can be very complicated and beautiful. I remember seeing a BBC program about it, yeah, although they are found everywhere else in the world, the small area in England is still the meca for crop circle researchers. (don’t know who would be specialized in this, I guess we need people from multiple disciplines to work together).

The following is called “Crop Circle of the Year”.

on blogging

Thursday, December 30th, 2004 -- By ET

Starting a blog is like having a child. It is a big commitment. I always wanted to write down my thoughts and those ephemeral exciting ideas, and blog seems the best medium to do it.

The reason that I’m comparing a blog with a child is that once you made the commitment, you can not quit any more. You have the responsibility to carry on and keep writing. Not just for myself , but also for those random visitors passing by my webpage. For other people, these two things are not comparable because you can always abandon a blog, but it is considerably harder to abandon a child. For me, they are the same, I’m simply not a quitter.

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications USA has hired 120 actors and actresses around the USA to ask passers-by to take their pictures with the company’s combined T68i mobile phone and camera.

The company is hoping to generate interest in the device using the unique approach. Sony Ericsson is running the campaign in seven U.S. cities as part of what one executive called “reach out and touch the consumer advertising.”

“It’s not a sales pitch,” Jon Maron, director of marketing communications for Sony Ericsson, is quoted by the LA Times.

He said the company went to talent agencies looking for young, attractive people who were interested in technology and willing to have their pictures taken all day long.

“They’re not just actors and actresses. They’re the young, cool people in the areas where they live,” Maron said.

Maron, who referred to the phones as “mobile multimedia devices,” said the actors are visiting places such as malls and nightclubs–tourist hubs where it would not seem unusual for a young couple to want their picture taken.

If asked, the actors will talk about the camera and explain that they are playing a role.

Salut to Chen Xingshen

Friday, December 3rd, 2004 -- By ET

This is very sad news. Chern is a great mathematician and role model for all of us who are searching for scientific knowledge to improve the lives of human kind. He is such a great scholar with so many contributions to so many fields and yet at the same time so humble, so approachable. Please rest in peace.
(Xinhua News Agency)
Shiing-shen Chern (Chen Xingshen), a world-renowned overseas Chinese mathematician, 93, died of illness at his home at Nankai University in north China’s city of Tianjin at around 7:15 p.m. Friday, the university announced.
Chern, a US citizen, is best known for his achievements in the study of differential geometry.

Born in 1911 at the time of the fall of China’s last imperial dynasty, the Qing, Chern graduated from Nankai University in 1930. Later he received further education at Qinghua University and the University of Hamburg in Germany.

He taught at several Chinese and US universities, including Princeton University, the University of Chicago, and the University of California, Berkeley. He is the only Chinese to win the Wolf Prize – the most distinguished award in the international mathematics field.

Chern’s particular field of research led to the development of the later-named Chern characteristic classes in fiber spaces that came to play a role in a wide area of mathematics and mathematical physics.

The International Astronomical Union officially named asteroid No. 1998CS2 after the noted mathematician in November for his outstanding contributions to human society.

Just found this website, it points to hundreds of well designed webpages. Some of them use flash, some xhtml, all are very visually pleasing.
