send your name to the space

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005 -- By ET

Just after I started to transmit my blogs to space, I can now send my name to Pluto.

NASA is preparing to send the New Horizons probe to Pluto. It will be the first earth device to get intimate with the icy planet. NASA is asking everyone to send them their names, and these names will be written on a disk to be included in the probe.

The New Horizons probe will be launched in January 2006 to explore Pluto and the Kuiper belt, in the outskirts of the Solar System. It is expected that the probe will return to earth in approximately 50 thousand years.

This reminds me of the two Voyager probes sent on Aug 20, 1977 (Sep 5, 1977). The twin voyagers have served their duty for more than 10,000 days. I remember reading about these spacecrafts when I was in primary school, and I wrote a diary about my dream of becoming astronomist. (In Chinese, Astronomist is “Tian Wen Xue Jia”, and Libral artist is “Wen Xue Jia”, my school teacher missed reading the “Tian”, and commented “Good choice, you need to improve your hand writing to become a libral artist”. She totally ignored what I wrote in that article about space exploration!)

I still feel very excited about the whole space exploration thing. I used to run SETI@Home on my laptop. In the summer, when the Air Conditioning is too strong, I like to run the client software BOINC on my office machine, it increases my office temporature by 3 to 5 degrees. :-)

Meteor shower

Thursday, August 11th, 2005 -- By ET

The Perseids Meteor shower comes every year, beginning in late July and stretching into August. Sky watchers outdoors at the right time can see colorful fireballs, occasional outbursts and, almost always, long hours of gracefully streaking meteors. Among the many nights of the shower, there is always one night that is best. This year: August 12th.

The source of the shower is Comet Swift-Tuttle. (Isn’t the name of the ghost gardener in the movie “The Others” Tuttle?)

And there’s a bonus: Mars. In the constellation Aries, right beside Perseus, Mars is shining like a bright red star. Step outside before sunrise, look east, and you’ll find you have a hard time taking your eyes off Mars. There’s something bewitching about it, maybe the red color or perhaps the fact that it doesn’t twinkle like a true star. It’s steady. You stare at Mars and it stares right back.

Picture this: It’s four in the morning. The sky is dark. The breeze is pleasant. Mars is beaming down from the east while meteors flit across the sky.

I’m always fascinated by the beauty of heavenly bodies. When I was young, a favorite place to go is Beijing Star Observatory. They have some machine to beam light dots to a dome that simulates the night sky. (iMax seems to have a similar machine, but it is unfortunately used for a rather naive laser show accompanying U2 music).

I still remember a summer going to the sea side town “Bei Dai He” with a few classmates. Corn and I spent two hours catching meteors, and to my big surprise, we found almost 20. It was in mid June, I remember this because we went their without taking some preparation class sessions for the college entrance exam (which took place in early July). Cost to me: I got punished by the teacher such that I could not go to Fudan University without taking the entrance exam. But it turned out trivial, because I took the exam and went to Tsinghua. :-)

Business School Rankings

Thursday, August 11th, 2005 -- By ET

I’m on the job market, so it is very natural for me to pay attention to the school rankings.

There are many school rankings available, from US News, Forbes to BusinessWeek, etc.  They are all MBA rankings, to me, the most important factor might be publication, which shows the research strength of a school.

Work at Home

Saturday, August 6th, 2005 -- By ET

Slashdot has a nice discussion about the pros and cons of knowledge workers working at home. To me, the point is not one about saving some money for the company (office space, etc.) or the individual (transportation cost, etc.). What really matters is how this change may affect the productivity of the workers. If staying at home really helps workers to worry less about family issues and concentrate on the work when they want to, then work at home (WAH) is something good for a company. It is even better if a worker can feel more comfortable to avoid office politics.

On a second thought, it seems obvious to me that there is no rule for firms to follow. Whether to WAH has to be decided case by case. Not only the job requirement is to be considered, individual heterogeneity has to be taken into consideration.

This is something I call “the principle of no principle”. :-)
