Halfway to Hell

Monday, June 26th, 2006 -- By ET

MIT is located in Cambridge, which is separated from Boston by the Charles River. There are a few bridges connecting them. The Longfellow bridge is the nearest to my apartment. Then there is a Harvard bridge. Why is it called “Harvard” bridge right in front of “MIT” main building? I was told that when the bridge was built, the City of Cambridge asked MIT to donate some money for the construction and obtain the right to name the bridge. MIT refused, not because of the money but because of the ugly design of the bridge — after all, MIT did not need yet another ugly architecture associated with its name. (MIT did not keep this promise when we built the Stata center :-p)

In the middle of this bridge, there is a sign:”halfway to hell”. I concur this after spending these years here. I can’t help feeling the joy of graduating. The joy, though, would never be experienced without going through MIT. So my feeling is really mixed. I did not check the other sidewalk leading to Boston, maybe they should put a sign:”halfway to life”

CowParade Mooves to the Hub!
Returning to its historical, and pastoral, roots in the summer of 2006, Bostons parks, plazas and streets will be filled with life-size cows. Organized by and benefiting The Jimmy Fund, CowParade Boston will take place in the summer of 2006 when over 100 life-size, painted cows will be on display. The public display will begin during the first week of June and conclude on September 5, 2006.

At the conclusion of the public display, the cows will be rounded up and sold to the highest bidders. Approximately 50 of the cows will be sold at a live auction in October 2006 and following the live auction, the remaining cows will be sold in an online auction. The proceeds from these auctions will benefit The Jimmy Fund.

Quick Facts About the Event.
Cows Graze: 1st Week of June September 5, 2006
Gala Auction: October 2006
Herd Goal: 150 cows!

I have an album of these cows, they are amazing. According to the map, I still need to visit about 60 cows to catch them all!

New Design

Sunday, June 25th, 2006 -- By ET

I have improved vaious aspects of the blog server.

  1. Most notably, integrated Gallery2 to the blog.
  2. Started the new hostname: http://mikezhang.com, all requests to the old MIT hostname mikezhang.com are permanently redirected to the new hostname.
  3. The static pages (e.g. contact, etc.) are dynamically generated from the database now.
  4. the wordress engine, mysql database, apache server, php, etc. were also upgraded to the most current version.
  5. I added random title bar generation, so each time you reload the blog page, the title bar image will be different, they are all hand picked from my photo gallery.

Here is a screenshot of the new gallery.

The last but not the least

I got featured on the MIT commencement website.

Here is what they wrote for this:

"Michael Zhang was the very last student to receive his degree, a PhD in management, at MIT's Commencement exercises on Friday, June 9. He jumped for joy, turned around, bowed to the faculty and ran down the aisle with his hands in the air. "

This is truly a special moment for me. I never expected to be special as the "last one", it was a pleasant surprise.

To be the last one, a lot of conditions have to be met:

  1. You have to have the right last name, in my case "Zhang" starts with "Z".
  2. You have to be in the right school, in my case Sloan School is the last school to go up stage, I know there are at least 30 people with family names behind me (Zykov, Zollei, Zimmerman, Zimbardi, Zia, Zhu, Zhou, Zhao, Zherebchevskiy, etc), but they are not in Sloan.
  3. You have to be getting the right degree, in my case it is PhD, my friend Zhu Yi's name is behind me but went up stage before me, because she was getting an MBA.
  4. You have to have the right first name, Jieying Zhang, another friend of mine went up just before me, because my name "Xiaoquan" came after hers.  It's great that she also got featured on the commencement website, with her daughter.

I'll post some photos later.

One day before the commencement, there was the hooding ceremony, something special for PhD receipients.  Here is a link to the news story, they also interviewed me, here is an exerpt of the article:

Michael Zhang, new Ph.D. in management, will be a professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology next fall, so he and his wife and their two daughters, Alantha, 4, and Ashley, 4 months, will move to Hong Kong after six years at MIT.

The Zhang family shared their fellow graduates' affection for the journey they shared while living at MIT. "Eastgate was a great community for us," Zhang said.

[[update on June 14, 2006]]

This photo got on the cover page of MIT newspaper: Tech Talk.  Together with the photos of Ben Bernanke (PhD 1979), chair of the federal reserve, and MIT President Susan Hockfield.

Download the Issue.
