I told my friend ZJY about our signing a contract with a maid.

Just got this in the email from her:

WY and I had a deep discussion about Philippine maid yesterday because of your email. We are so jealous! Everyday we spend a lot of time on house keeping. We cannot imagine how happy we would be if we don’t have to do that. We concluded that it is not that you hire a Philippine maid, the Philippine maid hired you to HK.

It was so logical. In fact, I never hesitated to tell people that we came to HK because we can hire a helper here. (Of course, the good research environment, blah blah) It is not because we are lazy, Jade is a good cook and she enjoys cooking, we all enjoy the time we spend with our daughters, they are so cute, any minute not being with them is our loss. A helper, however, can really release us to do more interesting things, such as writing an interesting blog, etc.

We interviewed about 10 helper candidates, that was quite an experience!

Jade interviewed two candidates over the phone and asked them to come for a talk, they never showed up. The third one pressed the intercom system downstairs, but after 20 minutes, no one knocked on the door. Jade and I had a deep discussion about what happened. According to Sherlock Homes: when you exhaust all possibilities, the remaining point, no matter how unbelievable it is, is the truth. We reached the conclusion that the guard of the building is a serial helper killer. So for the future interviews, I asked the candidates to call me before passing the guard post, it worked and I saved them all.

The next candidate was an old lady, she was 49 years old, she was so tiny that we fear she could fell with just a breath of wind. She certainly has a way to play with Ashley. She shaked her head quickly like what Jar-Jar Bin did in Star Wars, and Ashley burst to laughters. It was already 10pm, Ashley got so excited and could not sleep well at night. As a result, we all had Panda’s eyes the next day.

The next candidate was a yound lady, 26 years old. She never smiles, and was quite tense all through the conversation. I called her former employer, he said she was like that and she seldom used her brain, and that was why he fired her.

The next one came into the room with a strong smell of CHANEL No. 5.� She had a red scarf on her head.� With an iPOD, she could be a living ad for Apple.� Obviously, she had no experience taking care of infants.� She got fired by her boss without a reason, I could not reach her former employer to verify the reason.

Then there came two old ladies,� 59 and 62.� I don’t know why they are still working as helpers, I heard that with just a few years of work, they can save enough money to buy properties in Phillipines.� I’d love to give them the job, but their English was just incomprehensible.

So far, Jade and I both got helpless in interviewing the helpers.� We heard many stories of the consequences of hiring a bad maid.� But we really don’t know who we should hire.

Then came a new hope, the next candidate had an excellent reference letter.� She was married and had two children (so she should be emotionally stabler and had experience taking care of infants).� She worked with the former employer for 14 years.� I wouldn’t imagine how one can work so long with the same boss without being a superb helper.� Then she told me that because her visa was going to expire last week, her employer signed a new contract with her even when they did not need her (children went for college).� That means if we hire her, her official employer would be the previous one, and it won’t be changed in two years (the term of one contract).� We like her very much, but we don’t want to hire her illegally.� (If we hire her, her former employer, herself and we will all be put to jail and be fined about HKD$500,000 (about $60k USD).

Then we interviewed the helper that we signed contract with, she looks very organized and joyful too.

The helper’s room is about 3-4 square meters (35 square feet).� We were worried that maybe the condition is not preferable to the maid, but our friend (yes, xx and ww’s uncle Raymond) told us this was like a 5-star environment for them.� Few maids work in better conditions in HK.� Of course, if they work for Chow Young Fat or Jackie Chan, they can enjoy a huge house without the boss being at home all the time, but many master bedrooms in the high rises are less than 10 square meters.

Oh, we are so desperate to have the helper arrive soon.� Unfortunately, the process takes about a month before she can work for us legally.� Meanwhile, we will just be helpers of ourselves.
