Who am I ?

xiaoquan zhang photo I am an assistant professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). I got my PhD at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management on May 1st, 2006.

I am also the Managing Editor of Ecommerce Research Forum (now ISN Journal at SSRN.com).

Facts and Trivia

Three professors had the most influence on me: Prof. Erik Brynjolfsson, Prof. John D.C. Little, and Prof. Chris Dellarocas.

The photo to the right was taken when I was in a conference talking about how to divide (between me and Madonna) the money received from a bundle of songs produced by us. Unfortunately, while the content of my presentation was about distributing right amount of money and giving correct incentives to the content providers, I (and my advisor and coauthor Prof. Erik Brynjolfsson) do not get paid for the downloads of this video - if you are interested to see how the music industry should establish new business models to pocket in billions of dollars and if you can not afford $29 to purchase the video, please contact me.

My research interests are:

  • Online advertising
  • Word-of-mouth and online reputation systems
  • Provision and pricing of information goods
  • Economic issues on incentives of creative production

I have 4 degrees ranging in Fine Arts, Science and Engineering, and Management.

I’ve travelled in 12 countries including China, Russia, India, UAE, Sourth Korea, Singapore, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada and the US.

I study marketing implications of information flows that are enabled by the Internet. My recent research papers address the problems of bidding strategies in online advertising auctions, socially efficient distribution of digital contents (e.g music), the impact of online opinion forums on movie Box-office performance, better online advertising mechanisms, and the issues related to information overload, etc.

I have a pending patent on “Method and System for Using a Point System to Reduce Unsolicited Emails”, I propose an Anti-Spam method that relies on setting correct incentives for all the involved parties.

I have presented my papers in such conferences as ICIS2005, INFORMS Annual Conference 2005, ICIS 2004 and WISE 2004 (Workshop on Information Systems and Economics). My research about Information Overload resulted in a US Pending Patent. My Ph.D. thesis proposal won the 2004 4th Annual eBRC Doctoral Award Competition and I’ve been named SAP Doctoral Support Award Winner.

I am INFORMS Marketing Science Doctoral Consortium Fellow, and ICIS (International Conference on Information Systems) Doctoral Consortium Fellow.

My joint work on word-of-mouth of movies has been reported by CNN, Variety, ComputerWorld, etc.

Here is an issue of “Sloan News” that I featured on the cover page. :-)

Most recently, I got my picture featured on the official MIT newspaper: TechTalk (Download the Issue).
